In today's society, the important role of science extends far beyond the boundaries of the laboratory and research. Its contribution to the implementation of fact-based future policies and to overcoming crises such as climate change is essential. Scientific findings influence political decision-making processes and contribute to social responsibility. To ensure this, a close link must be established between politics and science. An atmosphere of mutual trust is needed so that fact-based solutions can be discussed and developed.
The "Max Planck Science Policy Winter School" (MP-SPWS) aims to shed light on this interface for young scientists and give them access to the field of tension between science and politics. It offers a platform on which young scientists can be educated about the underlying political processes and enter into an open discourse with political actors on pressing issues. This school consists of inspiring lectures by leaders in the policy sphere, workshops and educational content.

The program will provide an exciting opportunity for those interested in science policy, offering insights at European, national, and institutional levels. It will start with an introduction to science policy, emphasizing its importance for society and science on a whole. Participants will explore the various policy interfaces that science communicates with and how their processes work. Diving deeper, workshops will be dedicated to understand the difference between Science For Policy (S4P) and Policy For Science (P4S), and how they are both equally important for research. The program will also offer the opportunity to tackle the topic of Science Diplomacy and its importance in democratic societies. Through engaging lectures, hands-on workshops, visits and discussions led by experts, participants will develop skills for informed policy-making and effective communication as well as gain a deeper understanding of science-policy structures and how they may impact them. The program is designed to be dynamic, with ample opportunities for networking and collaboration between participants.
