Lars Onsager: A glimpse into the life and work of a peerless theorist

Lars Onsager ranks as one of the most profound theorists of the 20th century, and probably of any era. His work spans an astonishing range of fields: from theories of electrolytes, to phase transitions, superfluidity, turbulence, colloids, theory of
metals, the thermodynamics of biology, to mention only a few. In each case he entirely transformed the field. And yet, his path to success was far from smooth.
In this talk, I will touch on various aspects of his life and science, in the hope of stimulating not only interest in his fascinating science, but also the way in which he went about doing and communicating science, which is almost totally orthogonal to standard practice.
