In memory of Klaus Dransfeld

It is with great sadness that we learned of the death of Prof. Dr. Klaus Dransfeld. He passed away on April 26, 2024 at the age of 97.

Klaus Dransfeld was head of the Franco-German high-field magnetic laboratory in Grenoble from 1973-1977 and visiting professor at the MPI-FKF. In 1975 he was appointed as scientific member of the Max Planck Society and after his return from Grenoble he was director of our institute from 1977-1981. His group investigated the nature of elementary excitations in glasses as well as piezoelectric polymers and electrically conductive plastics.

In 1981, Klaus Dransfeld decided to accept an appointment at the University of Konstanz. In addition to his broad spectrum of fields of work, Klaus Dransfeld added the recently invented scanning probe microscopy, which he developed further in an original and visionary way.

We will remember Klaus Dransfeld with gratitude as an outstanding researcher, highly esteemed colleague and academic teacher.

Our deepest condolences go to Klaus Dransfeld's family.

The staff of the MPI for Solid State Research.
